“Catch” by Langston Hughes is about a boy being home a girl he likes and he calls her the catch of his life. This whole poem is a metaphor. Hughes writes that the boy came in with a mermaid on his shoulders with her tail beneath his arm. I think the mermaid represents a pretty girl and her curled tail is her curly hair. In the second stanza Hughes writes that the boy had found a fish to carry and to marry. I think this means that the boy has found a girl he will careful and one day marry. This poem makes me imagine a little boy carrying a mermaid on his shoulders. This poem has obvious imagery. This poem has rhyme but no set rhyme scheme witch makes it free verse .

Catch

Big Boy came
Carrying a mermaid
On his shoulders
And the mermaid
Had her tail
Curved
Beneath his arm.

Being a fisher boy,
He’d found a fish
To carry—
Half fish,
Half girl
To marry.
